Carlton House Desk Late 19th/Early 20th Century
A late 19th/ Early 20th Century Mahogany Veneered Carlton House Desk. Featuring a curved back section edged in ribbon moulding, hinged curved down swept “U” shape lids enclosing partitions which hold an ivories label from prestigious London cabinet makers “W.J.MANSELL LTD/ANTIQUE & MODERN FURNITURE/266 & 266A FULHAM ROAD SW”. The leather insert writing top fronts banks of drawers and cupboards, atop a cock-beaded centre drawer with pairs of drawers flaking it’s sides.
Often also known as the Carlton House writing table. The Carlton House desk is a specific antique desk form within the more general bureau à gradin form. The CarltonHouse desk form is supposed to have been designed in the 18th century for the Prince of Wales (who later became George IV) by George Hepplewhite, and named after Carlton House, which was at the time the London residence of the Prince of Wales.
