Flemish Terracotta Sculpture of Archangel Michael and Niche
A striking terracotta sculpture of the Archangel Michael, also known as St. Michael the Archangel, standing within a free-standing purpose built carved stone sectional niche. Late 18th/Early 19th Century. St Michael is depicted subduing the ancient Serpent or Dragon, representing the Devil. After the conflict (The Book of Revelation 12:7-9) Satan is thrown to Earth along with the fallen Angels where he still tries to “lead the whole world astray”. It expresses a balance between good and evil; as in life, few things are entirely good or entirely evil.
