Huge Pair of Handyside Campana Urns No.1 & Plinths c.1880

Huge Pair of Handyside Campana Urns No.1 & Plinths c.1880

A striking and rare pair of oversized Campana Urns with satyrs masks from the renowned English Foundry the Andrew Handyside Company (Britannia Iron Works, Derby) c.1880

The campana style urn on its associated pedestal has decorative open loop and satyrs mask handles on a deeply gadrooned bowl set upon a raised spreading socle foot. The body with a lobed everted rim is decorated with a foliate frieze accentuating the overall relief and detail.

Cast iron with original flaky white paint. Unusually including their three-sectional plinths. This urn is illustrated as Urn No.1 in the Handyside Catalogue of 1874.

Having lobed handles Satyrs faces and acanthus leaf foliate curling scrolls, this Classical ornamentation and decoration harks back to the influence of Roman antiquity and channeled through these decorative garden pieces, designed to bring formality and ornamental symmetry to your garden.
Andrew Handyside bought the Britannia Iron Works in 1848, and manufactured several ornamental vases in classical purity, form and ornament. Receiving distinctions at the Great Exhibition in 1850, the quality of their casts were exceptional and became more exceptional with time.

It is rare to find such large scale and matching pairs of these urns, particularly with their original pedestals.
