An incredibly unusual and rare, naively carved wooden, gessoed and polychromed Spanish Crucifixion. c.1760. This huge Holy Cross would have hung in a Church only to be removed for processions and religious service. The carved foliage cross tips bear Pomegranates. Granada is the name for Pomegranate in Spanish. Pomegranates were the specifically the symbol for the City of Granada and can be seen on a number of the monumental Holy Crosses within the City and still to this day, are regarded as good luck.
