Italian Cast Iron St Peter’s Key Door Knob 19th Century
A huge scale cast iron door handle in the form of St Peter’s hand grasping the key to the kingdom of Heaven.
Originating in early 19th Century Italy, the knob would have adorned a very grand and imposing door, probably one with strong connections to the Catholic Church.
The cast iron of the hand and wrist is iron coloured and patinated with a wonderful age pitted surface. The ornate key top and attached rose have a delicate colouring of verdigris green.
“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven” (Matthew 16:19)
Reputedly acquired from the Convent, later called Rosary Priory, (Caldecote Towers in 1870) Herefordshire. The likely hood that it had been acquired by the Italian palazzo inspired property’s creator in the mid 19th Century on an Italian Grand Tour.
