Lamentation of Christ c.1520
A wonderfully naive oil painting depicting the lamentation of Christ.
Jesus’ body is laid on a slab in his tomb. An an Angel grasps his shroud to mop his tears. Dabbing his eyes with his blood red robe representing the blood of Christ is John the Evangelist. Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene look on. The Crown of thorns and nails from the crucifixion are placed under his legs.
This would have been created as a private devotional painting, most probably in the Netherlands c.1520
