Flemish Medieval Crucifixion Group
A wonderful Flemish Medieval sculpture depicting a group of three figures from a crucifixion scene carved in limestone.
This limestone sculpture features detailed depictions of three figures, including armour, helmets, and attire from the era.
The figures that flank the central figure of Christ are possibly two centurions that were present at his crucifixion. The small dowel hole in the figure to the left’s hand may have allowed the attachment of a sword or spear.
This rare fragment, originally part of a larger ecclesiastical frieze, offers a unique glimpse into the customs and lives of those in that time period.
